Getting Back to Nature

What is grounding therapy?

Most of us are familiar with grounding as a particular type of coping strategy that is designed to "ground" you in, or immediately connect you with, the present moment. Grounding is often used as a way of coping with stress, anxiety, depression, and/or flashbacks or dissociation when you have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is also used to help people achieve more peace and connection in their lives.

There is a new form of grounding that accesses the electrical charge from the earth to facilitate healing by reducing inflammation and improving the electrical systems of the body and mind. It is based off of the understanding that we are meant to have our feet, hands, and bodies connected to the earth but the advent of plastic soled shows in the 1960's has disconnected us from this important and therapeutic connection. Ideally, we would walk barefoot on the ground several hours a day, but modern life makes that challenging. Clinton Ober and Dr. Stephen Sinatra developed grounding pads that fit on top of a mattress pad and just under a fitted sheet. These pads allow people to receive the same benefit as they would walking on the earth for 6-8 hours, while they sleep. Another benefit to sleeping on the grounding pads is that cellular repair happens during sleep and the grounding pads help facilitate cellular repair.

Below are some great videos that explain what this new type of ground therapy is:

'Grounding', the Latest Trend - What is it?

Grounding mats are meant to bring a connection to earth indoors. The mats usually connect via a wire to the ground port of an electrical outlet. The mats may be placed on the floor, on a desk, or on a bed so the user can put their bare feet, hands, or body on the mat and conduct the earth's energy.

Grounding Improves Sleep, Pain Management, and Emotional Stress

Grounding appears to improve sleep, help manage pain, and normalizes cortisol (a stress hormone) to reduce the stress response. The nervous system is an electrical system of the body and influences all these activities.

How does a grounding mat work?

Almost all of the biochemical reactions in the body involve electron transfer. The earth's surface has a negative electrical charge and when it comes in contact with the human body. The earth literally charges and revitalizes the body. The body fills up with electrons and builds up a static electric charge which neutralizes free radicals and inflammation. A grounding mat mimics the electric current of the earth allowing a person to bring the healing into their home or office.

There is mounting evidence of the benefits of grounding mats. There are implications for sleep, biological clocks and rhythms, and hormone secretion. It is well understood how electrons from antioxidants deactivate free radicals. We know these free radicals play a role in immune function, inflammation, and chronic disease.

A 2011 publication reported four different experiments examining grounding and its effect on human physiology. Electrolytes, thyroid hormone levels, glucose levels, and even immune response to immunizations improved with grounding.

Walking barefoot outside - weather and ground surface permitting - does have benefits, and those benefits transfer to grounding mats.

Can grounding therapy help with anxiety and depression?

Theoretically, anyone would benefit from connecting with the earth. The stress reduction of walking barefoot, interacting with nature, and mindfully walking will benefit your health.

For those with anxiety and depression, actively interacting with nature, exercising, and being mindful of the moment are all well studied approaches to moving through these conditions found mood was improved after an hour of grounding.

Anxiety can manifest itself in many ways, but one of these is due to lack of sleep caused by insomnia. Since insomnia is also shown to relate to depression and dementia, ground therapy has potential to help with those issues as well. Grounding while sleeping has been shown to help improve the quality of sleep.

Grounding has been shown to help with every aspect of the sleeping process: improved morning fatigue, less nighttime pain, higher daytime energy, decreased cortisol levels, and falling asleep faster.

Alpha Nutrition

The most efficient and healthiest way to get balanced nutrition is to take a small amount of ingredients in a liquid form with a good balance of your daily needs, using the RDI for moderation.

LIQUID...Is the only way to get maximum absorption because the absorption rate of tablets is poor and in many cases they pass right through your body, so you are literally throwing your money away. Tablets have poor absorption because they have:

      •   Binders to keep them together
      •   Artificial flavoring and coloring
      •   Artificial Sweeteners
      •   Mostly synthetic ingredients
      •   Disintegrators to break down the capsule
      •   Wax coatings

BALANCE & MODERATION... We are all different and there is no such thing as "one size fits all" when it comes to our individual needs. We use the RDA's to supplement your daily needs. (We all eat differently so our intake of nutrition varies from person to person.) Many companies are supplying supplements with Mega Doses' that can have unintended consequences by reducing the efficiency of other ingredients.

OVERDOSING... Many food products are being fortified with vitamins and you could be overdosing on your Fat Soluble' vitamins (A, D, E & K) which can be dangerous. Mega doses are not the answer!

ALLERGIC REACTION... Throwing all your supplements into 1 bottle or tablet doesn't work because you may be allergic (or the taste is awful) to one ingredient and this prevents you from taking it no matter how good you think it is.

EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT... We separate our minerals, vitamins and cminerals, etc because we are all different. (Some people need more minerals than vitamins and some vice versa.) This system gives you a 'flexible' approach to your nutritional needs and allows you to adjust your intake depending upon your current health condition.

DO YOUR TABLETS WORK FOR YOU? You can do a quick test at home by immersing your tablets in vinegar and check to see if it starts to breakdown within 30 minutes. Here is a capsule that has been in vinegar for 12 hours and it still has not released any of its ingredients! Liquid vitamins are more efficient than tablets/capsules because of the higher absorption rate.

Most vitamin suppliers use synthetic vitamins simply for ease of manufacturing, greater shelf life and because they are cheap.

The most efficient and healthiest way to balanced nutrition is to take a small amount of natural ingredients in a liquid with a good balance of your daily vitamin needs using the RDA for moderation.

We have now added 19 'Amino Acids' to our vitamins. Amino Acids are the "building blocks" of the body that make up proteins. These proteins make the muscles, tendons, organs, glands, nails, and hair. Growth, repair and maintenance of all cells are dependent upon them. Amino Acids that must be obtained from the diet are called "Essential Amino Acids" other Amino Acids that the body can manufacture from other sources are called "NonEssential Amino Acids."
